Did you notice that the Smart 3G billboard on EDSA/Boni is sitting on Gokongwei's land? It's on the Robinsons Pioneer lot.

If we can't deploy it yet... make money regardless.

If ... and if ... people want to switch to video calls, then maybe handset prices will drop. I think that's a more compelling app for most users than a mobile Internet.

Nah, I really don't think 3G will make a boom to our country. Many analyst think that the 3G technologies were a flop, the market was just not ready to take such a big step forward.

I could probably say the same thing about the jump to HDTV, companies like sony, samsung, microsoft are trying to push the HDTV technology with its new products. But not everybody can spend 100,000 pesos or more for a TV.

3G is crap.

At least in terms of market viability.

Various telcos in the UK and Hong Kong can attest to this.

That's why I cringe everytime I read about local telcos taking the limelight for setting up 3G-type infrastructure.

If 3G were as good as it is touted to be, it should have had extensive roll-out earlier. 3G was talk of the town two--even three--years ago, with the promise of boadband applications and high speed connectivity.

But I guess the market still isn't ready for this stuff. And add the fact that there are other, probably more viable, solutions such as 802.11-compatible protocols.

And enduser equipment is just so darned expensive, I doubt Pinoys would be quick to switch to 3G-enabled phones anytime soon.

I remember CDMA was the superior technology, but GSM had better marketing.

I think the next logical step would be for telcos to jump ahead to fourth-generation or 4G technology. Not that "3G" is synonymous to "GSM" (3G is not exactly the technology, but an aggregation of various technologies and protocols for high speed data and multimedia transfers).

Heck, this was talk of the town even last year and even in 2004.

You're right Ka Edong. What will Pinoys think of 3G?

Yup, 3G should be closer to a Mobile Internet. Good news (I hope) for VAS/Content providers.
