Xiaomi to bring its products offline, but with a catch

May 11, 15 Xiaomi to bring its products offline, but with a catch

Posted by in Business, Tech News

Here’s some good news (and bad news) for those who want to purchase some bang-for-the-buck devices from Xiaomi without all the hassle of going through Lazada’s online process. Let’s start with the good one: the Chinese tech brand will now bring its merchandise sales to offline permanently. You may recall that the company did a few pop-up stores at malls last year, and it worked on creating a buzz among those interested in the brand, creating long queue of lines and a surge of interest in the brand. While it may seem to be beneficial for those who aren’t fond of Lazada, here comes the bad news: Expect an increase in some, if not all, prices off their products. It’s understandable that the costs of operating offline tend to be much higher hence the online model they have been using since their inception in the country last year,  and along with the importation costs that tend to fluctuate over time, we may see prices moderately escalate across all products once they hit the offline market shelves. This also goes to products they sell online, as they can’t offer two different price models due to government restrictions. Here’s the statement from Mi Philippines on their facebook page: Dear Mi fans, As you may have noticed, some Mi products have had their prices increased, like our Mi In-Ear Headphones, which are now back in stock (P695 to P849). As much as we would like to maintain our original prices, sadly, the costs we incur in bringing in products have not remained constant. Aside from that, we are also working on adding another selling channel that you fans have been requesting constantly: we are working to have Mi products available offline soon. Yes, that’s right. You will soon be able to buy Mi from our official offline partner. We’ll announce more details about this soon. As you all know, there are additional operational expenses that we will incur once we go offline, which is why we had to...

Nokia and Alcatel to merge companies this year

Apr 15, 15 Nokia and Alcatel to merge companies this year

Posted by in Business, Tech News

Following news updates that Nokia is gearing up to sell its HERE mapping business, the Finnish giant has now confirmed that it will merge with French company Alcatel-Lucent to create an IP-connecting world. A new press release posted today on Nokia’s website sees the finalization of the new deal to go through and will be expected to close in the first half of 2016. Transaction highlights include purchase of the French company valued at EUR 15.6 billion, with Nokia owning 66.5% of the total company shares. The new company will be called Nokia Corporation and will still be based in Finland. Here is the statement from Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri: “Together, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia intend to lead in next-generation network technology and services, with the scope to create seamless connectivity for people and things wherever they are. Our innovation capability will be extraordinary, bringing together the R&D engine of Nokia with that of Alcatel-Lucent and its iconic Bell Labs. We will continue to combine this strength with the highly efficient, lean operations needed to compete on a global scale. We have hugely complementary technologies and the comprehensive portfolio necessary to enable the internet of things and transition to the cloud.  We will have a strong presence in every part of the world, including leading positions in the United States and China. Together, we expect to have the scale to lead in every area in which we choose to compete, drive profitable growth, meet the needs of global customers, develop new technologies, build on our successful intellectual property licensing, and create value for our shareholders. For all these reasons, I firmly believe that this is the right deal, with the right logic, at the right time.” This new development comes after a Bloomberg report published earlier today, citing the two companies are in ‘advanced talks’ over a possible full merger which includes purchasing Alcatel-Lucent’s core networking, wireless, and fixed-line access equipment businesses in an attempt to compete with Swedish rival Ericsson. In separate, identical statements yesterday, both companies confirmed the...
