Smart launches music portal to bring accessible digital music downloads to Filipinos

Last night, Smart held a party to celebrate its partnership with MCA Music to bring us Smart Music, a music portal where you can download tracks for as low as P15 without a credit card. Smart calls this a “game-changing” online music service. With Smart Music, over 70 million subscribers from Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular can purchase more than 3 million tracks in MCA’s global music catalog using their prepaid load or as an additional charge to their monthly bill. Tracks cost P15 for old releases while P20 for newer ones. Simply register your mobile number, which will be your account for this service, at www.smart.com.ph/music using your desktop or mobile web browser. Once registered, you can browse through the songs (international and local) under the MCA label and purchase them. You will be given a link for you to download your MP3. If you have an Android device, you can download the MP3 straight to your phone’s memory. Else, you can always download the file to your PC or Mac before syncing to your device. Obviously, the service is still limited to songs by artists under MCA and there are plenty of good ones out there not under that label. Smart is going to bring in other labels in the future. However, you’ll get access to music of some of the top international stars like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, U2, Black Eyed Peas, and Eminem. For the local scene, there’s Ely Buendia and his bands Pupil and The Oktaves, Sitti, Nyoy Volante, Urbandub, Franco, ChicoSci and more. MCA Music also carries the license to music’s classic collections like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Motown catalogs. Tracks downloaded from Smart Music are not protected by DRM and once downloaded, there’s no way to prevent you from sharing them with other people. Smart is banking on the affordability and accessibility provided by their service for Filipinos to support the music artists, especially local ones, by...

O+ phones still having problems with Globe SIMs

Reports are still coming in of O+ phones not getting any network signal when a Globe SIM is used. It seems that this issue manifested just yesterday afternoon, July 4, and is still ongoing right now and might continue over the weekend. The network issue is not a problem on a single O+ model. Users are reporting having the problem on O+ 8.32, 8.52, 8.36, 8.31, 8.15, 8.12, 8.6, 8.75, 8.35 when a Globe SIM is used. It doesn’t seem to be entirely a Globe issue because those SIMs work when transferred on a different handset. Other SIMs posed no problem when used on the same O+ phone. However, O+ is saying that due to the recent system upgrade by Globe, it affected the service of prepaid subscribers and claims that there is nothing wrong with their devices. O+ is still working with Globe for a fix though. They’ve been talking with Globe support for the whole day and released an announcement on their FB page about 2 hours ago.   Well it seems that the problem hasn’t been resolved yet and it doesn’t bode well for the affected customers unless both parties will be working over the weekend to fix this. Please continue to monitor  the O+ FB page for updates. Smart loads schoolbooks into SIM cards, wins big in Cannes Lions

Late last year, Smart Communications along with creative agency DM9JaymeSyfu took on an initiative called Smart Txtbks. This campaign uses mobile technology to literally lighten the load of public school students burdened by carrying heavy textbooks every day. Private schools and universities have solved this problem by introducing tablets and e-Book readers in the school system. However, for public school students where the average monthly income of a family is not enough to pay for a tablet, the closest they have to such device is a basic mobile phone. What Smart did with Smart Txtbks is convert textbooks and workbooks into SIM content that can be read by public school children using those affordable analog phones. They collaborated with book publishers to load materials into SIM cards and distributed them to several public schools all over the Philippines. With this effort, students of participating public schools are now carrying bags that are 50% lighter than before resulting to a high 95% school attendance rate and 90% average test performance. Smart Public Affairs Head Ramon Isberto said Smart Txtbks shows how mobile technology, even “low-tech” analog phones, can help improve people’s lives. This campaign also gave Smart Communications the country’s first ever Grand Prix at the recent 60th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the highest honor given by what is considered in the industry as the Oscars of advertising. They beat a hundred other entries in the mobile category which included submissions from Adidas, Google, McDonald’s, and Nike. Merlee Jayme, partner and chief creative officer at DM9JaymeSyfu, said: “Our happiness comes from the fact the country’s biggest telco got the biggest global award. Plus, you can’t help but feel elated when Rei Inamoto, the chief creative officer of AKQA and the Cannes jury president for the mobile category, said, ‘This Grand Prix may not be the sexiest and shiniest piece of work but it surely is the most beautiful idea I’ve ever seen.’” Related posts: No related...
