Apple finally revealed their latest iPad which they simply call “The New iPad”, and just like with the iPhone 4S, this new iPad features only minor upgrades from the iPad 2. No revolutionary design nor stellar features. Still the same look although with souped-up specs. But should you rush to get one? Check out what the new iPad can give you and see if it’s worth upgrading your iPad 2 for. Retina display Apple’s Retina display is really gorgeous and seeing it on a bigger display is just breathtaking. It sports a 2048 x 1536 display resolution for a generous 264 pixels per inch density. It also has a newer IPS panel which Apple claims to give 44 percent greater saturation than their previous IPS display. A5X processor with quad-core graphics To power that gorgeous Retina Display, the new iPad has an A5X processor which has a quad-core graphics module. How fast is this exactly? According to Apple, it offers four times the performance as the Tegra 3 found on Asus’ Transformer Prime and some upcoming quad-core Android devices. iSight camera The new iPad now has the iSight camera. A 5-megapixel side-iluminated sensor, with 5-element lens and an infrared filter which was also found in the iPhone 4S. One thing’s for sure, you won’t be ashamed with the quality of photos you take with this new iPad. It can now also do 1080p video recording by the way. Voice dictation Also supported is voice dictation. It’s not exactly Siri but it will free up your hand as you compose your mail or jot down notes. A speech-to-text function if you will and it can handle multiple major languages. 4G LTE You’ll also get 4G LTE support here if you opt for the non-WiFi-only version. For the Philippines, you can take advantage of the up to 21Mbps HSPA+ networks with this device and it will also be ready for LTE when local telcos start rolling them out. Oh you can also use it as a...

Google renames Android Market to Google Play, adds music, books, and movies

Mar 07, 12 Google renames Android Market to Google Play, adds music, books, and movies

Posted by in Tech News

And just like that the Android Market is now called Google Play, which in turn will be more than just an online store for Android apps and games. With Google Play you can also buy e-books, music, and rent movies in addition to buying apps and games found in the Android Market. Don’t know why they named it Google Play in the first place since it’s not just for gaming. Anyway, Google Play breaks the barrier between the PC and Android devices as this allows you to access whatever you bought from the Google Play store into your Android phones, tablets or the web. Google does this by harnessing the power of the cloud. We’ve already seen it with Google eBookstore and Google Music where your music and e-book library is in their cloud and they’re consolidating it in one place called Google Play. Don’t worry, you still have the option to download it for offline listening, viewing or reading. You can also give your Google+ friends a free listen on whatever music you want to share. What’s nice with the cloud solution, especially in books, is that you can start a book on your PC, continue it on your phone, and finish it on your tablet without skipping a beat. Same thing with music (which I’ve been doing a lot), you can sync your Google Music to all your Android phones over the cloud so you can enjoy all your songs anywhere without having to be near your main PC. Along with these new content, there are also new corresponding Google Play apps to handle them. Be sure to install the Google Play Music, Google Play Video, and Google Play Books app when it becomes available. And to celebrate the launch of Google Play, Google is having an amazing week of savings called their “7 Days to Play” celebration! An example would be Gameloft’s  N.O.V.A. 2: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance & Asphalt 6: Adrenaline games which is available for the rock bottom price of $0.49 only (that would...

Globe sets up tech incubator to support local technopreneurs

Tech incubators have been experiencing a recent resurgence around the world and Globe Telecom is setting up its own incubator focused on helping  local aspiring technopreneurs launch their own businesses. The Globe incubator will partner with aspiring technopreneurs by building an end-to-end support system that marries the ‘hardware’ of big companies with the ‘software’ of mentorship and community partnership. Startups supported by the Globe incubator have the advantage of access to various platforms of Globe which are usually open only to large established companies. They could qualify for seed capital to help them launch their company faster; and introductions to partner companies within the Globe, Singtel and Ayala networks here and abroad to help them scale bigger.  The startups would get education and training programs tailored to their needs, one-on-one mentorship from experts in various fields, and peer support from the local startup community. Minette B. Navarrete, Head of Globe New Business Group said that this project will provide the startups with the efficient environment and tools needed to build and test, seed funding to enable focus on execution, a startup development program with mentor and community feedback, and support for integrating into business networks. She noted that while many Filipinos have very good breakthrough ideas for their own independent businesses, and the capability to make these scale efficiently through ICT, web and mobile applications, a lot of them do not have the necessary resources to pursue their ambition. “There are people with the aptitude and the desire to become entrepreneurs, but they face many hurdles to giving up their day jobs. Even if they did launch their business, they may not have the training, capital, and business network to enable their startup to scale.  Incubation makes resources available to those who need them. But unlike many corporate incubators, the Globe incubator does not have profit or capital gain targets: it’s not just about the money! The Globe incubator will offer seed funding, yes, but cash is only part of the story. We will make...

This makes digital zooming on this device better than optical zooms. If you want to get to the bottom of this PureView thing, Nokia explains it better here. It’s a very special device with a special camera technology that made it earn the most prestigious MWC award from leading journalists and analysts at the show. Jo Harlow, EVP smart devices, told Conversations after picking up the award: “It’s a fantastic award because it signifies that consumer experience counts. It’s about tech, but it’s about how tech is used to make a consumer have a fantastic experience. The imaging is fantastic; the audio is fantastic; the navigation technology is fantastic.” The Nokia 808 PureView is a 4-inch device powered by a 1.3GHz single-core processor and runs on Nokia Symbian Belle.
