More likely than not, each app will develop a userbase separate from each other. Everyone thought MSN would bring about the end of ICQ and AIM. Everyone thought that Y! would bring about the end of MSN. Everyone first thought that Google Talk will bring about the end of everything else. None of these would-be app killers have done anything but bring more hassle and multi-network IMs. I still have my 6 digit ICQ account (new accounts are 8 digits or more).
