Fake iPod Nanos hit Manila

Was passing by Makati Cinema Square this afternoon and noticed a makeshift stall was doing a gadgets bazaar. Best sellers are 29″ TV sets (unknown brand) for only Php7,000.

What caught my attention was an iPod Nano imitation. I took a closer look and the device was really close to the real thing. They’re in 256MB capacity, plays mp3 and videos and has an FM player — both in black and pearl white models.

Fake iPod Nano The media player is officially called an MP4 but the face plate has a lettering of iPod 650 in it. The video is aweful though — looks like 64 colors only and the boot-up screen says “Bye Bye”. Funny. (Wasn’t able to take actual shots of it using my camera phone since a lot of people are watching and wanted to take a hold of it too.)

How much? For a low, low price of Php3,500 you can own one of these babies. *heh*

Update:
First discovered last December in Engadget (which refers the price in Philippine peso.) TheMP3Players.com reports that the same has been spotted in Japan.

fake ipod nanos..hmm..i actually came across these things thousands of times already..they’re actually very popular in the phils..anything that looks and acts like an ipod, i think, is accepted here…the case is..judging from the appearance of the fake nano..it looks terrible..it doesn’t match the appearance of the orig. ipod..the screen is smaller, the ‘m’ button should be ‘menu’..and lots of other things dont match as well…maybe the sound quality and video quality is a big goner in these fake ipods….
even if i lack money to buy an ipod..nano or video..i wouldn’t opt for one fake ipod..it’s shameful and it’s terrible..
might as well get an orig. one that is well worth the money and hardwork

    peace y’all :))

  9. mga_pinoy_talaga says:

    psssh…pinoy na pinoy talaga oh..

almost everything in the phils. is a fake..cds, dvds and many other more are pirated..lhat na pedeng magaya..ginagaya na tlga ng mga pinoy..

the ipod looks terrible..smaller screen(as psycho freak said)..mali pati ung ‘m’ button..and im pretty sure malaki ung difference sa sound quality..

even in big and famous malls here in the phils..fake things show up..the filipinos naman tend to buy those fake things..not knowing that a fake ipod would cost much more than an orig. one, because fake ipods tend to malfunction easily and so there would be the hassle of buying an orig ipod, then maybe finding som1 to fix the broken ipod…

haay…bli nlng kac kau ng mga orig..sulit nman eh..

at bakit ba puro ipod nlng? meron pa namang creative zen v plus na medyo maayos pa kesa sa ipod..

    mga pinoy tlga oh….

This fake ipod nano’s hitting manila is just disappointing. its enough that they pirate the cds and dvds, but going to ipods? man this is gadget blasphemy. ipods are just the best stuff out there. for the music lover like me, its the ultimate gadget man. people should save up cash to buy them, not making cheap-ass look-alikes. You’re damn right im pissed

  11. Well think about it for a sec right…

The only reason that people buy this stuff is because the real thing costs thousands….

That may look a meer below 100 bucks in the usa. We r humans hu r tempted really….
I mean it’s not bad… for a cheap knockoff… but sumtimes… most things cost loads…. and the philippines is a 3rd worlfd country… Do u think poor people there can afford it?

If you were poor and a 60 $ ipod was in a store and a 120$ in the other store… Wat wud u pick…. Some people will compare these things… Maybe not u…. but them…. Give it a chance….

Ps. I hate knockoffs but i have tis 1gb ipod (fake) and i don’t want the original one cos i find this one wayyyyyy… better!

I’ve seen a lot of these fake iPods, from the Greenhills stalls to the appliance stores in malls. It’s funny how certain people think of making knockoffs of a gadget that sold mainly as a status symbol. Look at the iPod. People don’t buy it because they want to listen to music. If that’s the reason, then people would certainly opt for cheaper (but not counterfeit) music players. But what makes the iPod sell is its status-symbol image. And because everyone wants to be cool, they’re drooling over the device. But some of these people don’t have much money, and that’s where the fakes come in. I don’t actually hate the iPod, but what bothers me is the idea that it’s becoming more like a status symbol than a functional music player. I won’t buy an original iPod, but I won’t buy a fake one, either. I’d just settle for a good, decent MP3 player.

  13. I bought a fake nano on the street for 75 dollars and i love it. It was 4GB and it works great! It hold plenty of songs and also has a built-in FM radio, i can also record songs onto the unit from the FM Radio.
    LOVE IT!

  14. My sister just got scammed into buying a *new* style fake iPod nano off ebay – it broke after a day! Check out the pics here, it’s pretty damn close!

Kaya…nagiipon ako ng pera para makabili ako uli ng iPod classic 80gb. Hindi ko siguro pagsisisihan yun kasi pwede ko naman gawing disk drive yun pag may camera ako o kung anu ano.
