Filipino students represent the country in the 8th Annual Imagine Cup in Poland
Imagine Cup 2010 is the world’s premier student technology competition which is sponsored by Microsoft. Did you know that we have two groups of students who made it to the finals to compete in Warsaw, Poland?
The theme for this year is Millennium Development Goals so students have to create or develop their programs to help alleviate the eight hardest challenges we face in the world today – ranging from reducing poverty and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS to providing universal primary education.
From De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, Team Khronos qualified to compete in the software design category with their project called L.I.G.T.A.S which stands for Location-based Information Gathering for Tragedy Alleviation System. It is a web-based disaster control and coordination system which provides a wide range of features and functionalities that enable better relief and service operations, prevention, and remedy mechanisms in local disaster-related incidents.
Competing in the Game Design Category, By Implication which is composed of students from Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines, will be facing off against students from 5 other countries.
Their game Wildfire is about saving the world from opponents like rampant poverty, gender inequality, inadequate education and environmental degradation through volunteerism, social interaction, and nonviolent activism.
“We’re very proud of the projects that we’ve seen and we’re confident that the two Philippine teams will do very well in the competition. The solutions that they are presenting demonstrates the power of technology to transform education and change how we live, think, and work,” said Tim Vergel de Dios, Academic Developer Evangelist, Microsoft Philippines.
