Free US and UK Telephone Numbers From Within the Philippines (or Anywhere)

Do you know you can get free US and UK telephone numbers even from the Philippines? Or anywhere for that matter? If you have a decent Internet connection (preferably broadband) and a VoIP client (software or hardware), you can easily sign up for free US- and UK-based DID numbers that callers can use to contact you thru your computer.

It’s a three-step process I have outlined on the J Spot and here’s the skinny.

  1. Sign up for an account with a SIP provider.
  2. Download a SIP-enabled VoIP client (if you don’t have hardware).
  3. Sign up for free US and/or UK DID numbers that automatically forward to SIP.

This is very useful for Philippine-based businesses or freelancers with US- or UK-based clients. Families with relatives working abroad can also use this (if the local side has access to a VoIP-enabled computer and the other only has access to a telephone).

I regularly use SkypeIN. What’s the difference between this approach and SkypeIN as far as quality is concerned?

Skype has superior tunneling capability, and perhaps a better codec suite, than SIP. I guess the most significant advantage is the zero cost of the incoming DID line.

You’re right, Migs. Skype uses superior codecs (rivaled only by Gtalk, I think). You can get telephone quality conversations thru dialup connections.

I do think, though, that SIP can also use these codecs. The problem is that since the clients may not always be standard (say, point A and point B use different software or VoIP phones) the call defaults to the codec common among the two parties. Skype-to-Skype calls are great if both ends use Skype. Voice quality is downsampled when talking to someone on POTS.

Actually, there’s already a local phone service called myWorld Phone that gives you a cellphone with a Philippine cellphone number, and a foreign fixed line number attached to that phone that family and friends overseas can call at the cost of a local call to them! It doesn’t cost much, and you don’t even have to be near a computer to be reached because they can call you on your cellphone. You get like 100 FREE minutes to call overseas per month (which you’d barely use if you just get the person you’re calling overseas to call back on your fixed line), and the option to get up to 3 overseas fixed line numbers attached to your cellphone. Been using it a lot lately because I have relatives overseas. I’ve got a San Francisco number and a Sydney Australia number and they work great! Much clearer than VOIP like skype and no lag. You can learn more about it on http://www.myworld.ph
