Mp3: Not Just Music
While most have music in their iPods, I have the voices of podcasters in mine. Topics range from technology, history, self-help, religion, business, management and entrepreneurship. From time to time, I do load up my Astone Rumba 2000 with music. But most of the time it’s just pure talk.
So what’s playing on my mp3? Here are my top 5 podcasts.
Startupnation.com. It has a 10-step plan which they discuss in a fun, informative and practical manner. Online presence, patenting, marketing, finance you name it. Towards the end of the show, they feature an elevator pitch, where a caller can “ride a virtual elevator with a venture capitalist” for one minute and have it critiqued by the hosts Jeff and Richard Sloan, the hosts.
And their battle cry “We are open for business!”
Manager-tools. For those in the corporate world, this podcast talks about how to become a better manager. Though I am not a manager (yet?), I find their practical tips and down-to-earth conversations of the hosts Michael Auzene and Mark Horstman very informative. They’ve taken me through coaching, one-to-ones, firing, hiring and resumes.
Their intro: If you are tired of a lot of management theory and would like to learn specific actions today to improve your management performance you’d like the manager tools podcast.
Twit – This Week In Tech – Is there any tech guy who does not like Leo Laporte? I’ve always loved his screen savers in Tech TV before they became G4.This podcast gives the latest on tech and gadgets and well-informed intelligent opinions and reviews delivered with a dash of humor.
Daily Breakfast – Movies, TV, News and Music and more. Fr. Roderick Vonhögen’s intro of a rooster crowing and a banjo merrily playing perks you up. His regular feature includes podsafe music which is quite good. Treat it as a school of media literacy. From this podcast are the spin-offs: Secrets of Harry Potter, Star Wars Chronicles and Secrets of Narnia.
Catholic Insider – Another podcast from Fr. Roderick Vonhögen. Soundseeing tours of Europe with sprinklings of church history. He mostly frequents old churches. He captures the ambiance by recording on site which makes you appreciate what he is talking about. You might just be convinced (like me) to dream of going to Europe for a vacation.
Special mention: Rosary Army. I’ve not downloaded regularly from this website but have the 4 mysteries of the Holy Rosary (Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous and Glorious) episodes always present. I play the appropriate mystery and pray with podcasts on my way to workand listen to the rest afterwards.
It’s not only music that rocks you know.

banksxs:
the podcast concept is nothing new. It’s basically a recorded show that you can get anytime when you want it (audio or video). If you’re familiar with the show, the Screensavers with Leo Laporte, he now does TWiT and Security Focus. You might want to check out podnova.com for starters
