Next Mobile and Tonyboy Cojuangco: Investors or Gamblers?

From Big telcos oppose 3G applications of new firms:

MAJOR mobile phone companies have asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to dismiss the applications of AZ Communications Inc. and Next Mobile Inc. to operate third-generation, or 3G, wireless telecommunications services.

Globe Telecom Inc., Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc. and Bayan Telecommunications Inc. have told the NTC that both firms are “speculators” and do not have enough money to put up a 3G network.

AZ is owned by Antonio “Tonyboy” Cojuangco. So why are they buying these expensive cellular licenses?

Globe said in its petition to the NTC that AZ and Next Mobile merely hoped to acquire 3G licenses before turning around and selling them.

Sell to whom? The bigger telcos?

It said Next Mobile had a “pathetic track record” in the industry and AZ had no track record at all.

Doesn’t Cojuangco’s experience in PLDT count for something?

And then we know that bigger telcos does not mean better service, as shown by the most active post here in Pinoy Tech Blog.
