Preview: Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0
Early this week at a Samsung event, we get to see the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0. This MID or mobile internet device was announced a early this year but it’s still a long way before it becomes available to the market for reasons unknown to us. It’s basically a slightly bigger Samsung Galaxy S without any capability to connect to a GSM network for calls, SMS and internet.
The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 is not a smartphone nor a tablet but Samsung is positioning it to be a MID / PMP (portable media player). It’s essentially a bigger iPod Touch that runs on Android. You won’t be getting the wide array of games/apps as that of its Apple counterpart but it support microSD card for that extra space for all those videos you want to bring along. And it has a better rear camera.
This device won’t have the Super AMOLED screen but will get an SLCD on its 5” display. It has the same 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor from the Galaxy S and a 3.2MP rear camera plus a VGA in front for Skype or video chat. It feels plasticky like the Galaxy S though but it’s light as well so it won’t take up extra weight on your bag.
A Samsung rep told us that it will be available mid-August with a price tag that would compete with the iPod Touch 4G. I’m guessing in the 12k to 14k range.

is this the same as the samsung galaxy player?

Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi Only is now P14,990. (I bought one a week ago) so will this be a good way to position its price?
Processor used by the Galaxy S is not from Qualcomm. Galaxy S uses Samsung made processor codenamed: Hummingbird. Does Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 use the same or they switched over to Qualcomm?
whoops. you are completely correct. it’s the samsung hummingbird not a qualcomm processor.
…cannot connect to the internet? what’s the use of Flash Player 10.1?
cannot connect to the internet via GSM network. you can still connect via WiFi.
The device seems to be pretty cool, but so are other alternatives. I wonder how much it would be sold in the market? With the specs that high, I can only imagine it being sold somewhere close to other alternative tablets
i bought mine last week for 12,990 which should be its universal price in the philippines, though i’m seeing some shops selling it for 13,990… the only problem is… NO ACCESSORIES YET!!.. i have no screen protector nor puch that will fit this device!! oh well… it’s still a kewl device for its price!!

i am not quite sure about that coz i havent used the touch 4g, but its performance is damn fast, it can play 720p MKV files that i have that even laptops that has atom processors have a difficult time playing, that is soo impressive… the touch screen is flawless, battery life extend to 2 days of wifi, games and video playing for me, and finaly, SO MANY APPS! hehe, cant wait for the upgrade to gingerbread.
Hi Kreauxe….I bought my samsung galaxy s 5.0 but i think i have a problem wwith my unit….the battery last for 15 hours nd that is continous using of my player….my battery drains fast everytime i use my wifi nd downloading apps pls email…[email protected]
Dude, I bought mine at 12300Php, I bought it at abenson’s and all the samsung products there are discounted exclusively.. And yeah, accessories are so damn hard to find. I only have a screen protector. (rarely found at the shop at festival mall) so funny that it only covers the LCD screen not the entire front tablet but its ok. (better than nothing)
To all Galaxy S wifi 5.0 User: Is there any official update via Kies? Another one, can you root it? I read about SuperOneClick, have anyone of you tried rooting your Galaxy S wifi 5.0?
