Yes, antivirus programs or software do help us protect our computers and other devices but the best way to protect ourselves (identity and information online) is still to be mindful of what we post and what we share about us (personal information and such).

For the purpose of protecting internet users, they themselves should be aware of ways that could lead to identity theft. Simple things like having an easy-to-remember-but-hard-to-guess-passwords and not giving detailed information in their profiles can lead to the safety of their identity. Having a reliable anti-virus program is also a key factor. Finally, never give your password if an e-mail from your system administrator requires you to do so. Just be aware of all the things you click and tap, and you’re good to go.. :)

Online consumers (such as myself) must be aware that as technology advances, the dangers that come with it are multiplying. The following are some of the basic (but effective) measures to protect oneself from the dangers of the online world. FOR PASSWORDS: Use a password that is easy for you to remember but hard for other to guess; ensure that you keep your password confidential at all times by not writing it or divulging to anyone; do not use the “save and remember the password” browser feature; ensure immediate change of your password if you think it has been compromised. FOR PROTECTION AGAINST VIRUSES: ensure that you install an antivirus software and update it regularly. Keep the engine and pattern definitions up-to-date to prevent viruses from going into your PC; do not download any software from a website that is of doubtful origin; install a spyware or malware removal program. Spyware or malware programs can take control of your PC’s system with the purpose of stealing valuable information; install the latest patches and service packs on your operating system, browser, and e-mail programs to prevent system vulnerability-related attacks. FOR PHISHING ATTACKS: avoid disclosing personal or account details via email, SMS or embedded link; be skeptical of unsolicited e-mails or SMS messages, especially those that concern personal / account information; delete suspicious e-mails or e-mail attachments without opening them, even if they seem to have originated from someone you know; check the security certificate of suspicious web pages; before entering personal or account information into a site, make sure it is secureo; if you think you may have responded to a suspicious e-mail, change your password as soon as possible; as much as possible, avoid doing Internet banking transactions using public computers such as those in the Internet cafes; Should you, however, need to do so, we suggest that you close the browser after logging off; we also advise you to change your password immediately when a private computer is already available to you.

More than installing a reliable anti-virus software, the best way to protect your device and files is to make sure that said software is always updated and your files regularly backed-up to a secure alternative hard drive. That way, you’re prepared for any “surprises.”
