Rakuten Acquires Viber for $900 Million

Japanese Internet giant Rakuten has just announced that it will buy Viber for $900 Million. The purchase came as no surprise as there were already speculations early this week about Viber being sold to another company. What’s surprising is that Rakuten was not amongst those rumored to takeover the Cyprus-based messaging app. Earlier speculations were pointing to Line or WeChat as Viber’s potential buyers.

The acquisition adds 300 Million users to Rakuten’s 225 Million members and presents a major challenge to Asian messaging apps Line and WeChat.
