Samsung Galaxy W mid-range Android smartphone

For the longest time, Samsung didn’t have an Android phone that’s not too big nor too small for an average Pinoy’s hand. That’s very surprising considering that Samsung has released oodles of Android phones of all shapes and sizes… but not the 3.7″ – 3.8″ screen size with at least 1GHz processor type of phones. HTC was successful with that size on their HTC Desire which was updated to the HTC Desire S and recently the HTC Rhyme.

Anyway after all the waiting, the Samsung Galaxy W (for Wonder) is available in the market for some time now. This phone looks like your typical Samsung Galaxy phone with the familiar front looks and textured back panel. It has a 3.7-inch screen with the same resolution as that of the Galaxy S (480 x 800) but with a more powerful 1.4GHz processor. It also comes with a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 1.6GB internal storage. Oddly, it can only support up to 16GB of expandable storage via microSD.

So who’s going to use this phone? For people who thinks that the Samsung Galaxy Ace is underpowered and undersized, the Samsung Galaxy SL so last year and too big, and the Samsung Galaxy S2 too pricey for a phone, the Samsung Galaxy W could be a nice compromise. The screen is not too big to attract attention but not too small for surfing either. The processor is powerful enough to run most if not all, current apps today smoothly.

With an SRP of Php16,990, the Samsung Galaxy W is really a nice middle-ground phone in the whole Samsung Galaxy lineup. It’s not flashy by any means but it’s a pretty solid Android for its price. Oh it comes in black and white color by the way.

Samsung Galaxy W I8150 Specs:
1.4GHz Scorpion Qualcomm MSM8255T, Adreno 205

3.7″ SLCD, 480 x 800

How much the price of this Android Phone?

  • Thank for the review of Samsung Galaxy W. I’m currently looking for phones that would fit a traveller like me. Will check if you have a review on the Samsung android phone that has dual sim. 🙂

  • Ron

I bought one of these one day after it started being sold in stores here. It’s a very nice usable phone, not too big and not too small. Just a correction though, it supports up to 32GB micro SDHC cards. I have one installed and it works perfectly fine.

    • cool thanks for confirming Ron. the PR they sent us was wrong then. 🙂

  • JmBalicano

White is definitely this phone’s color. Back-for-buck specs too.

    • JmBalicano

  • Griswold

It looks plain … not elegant as HTC phones. At least there’s a white version to make it a bit stylish.

  • Calvin, Which do you think is Better? The Nexus S or this one? I’m planning to get one for Developing Apps in Android

    • i would go for the newer one so etong Galaxy W na lang.

  • kris

Hi Sir, just want to ask if what is better. Lg Optimus black or this Samsung Galaxy w? My concern are just the net surfing (social networking sites), youtube, and sites that I can be able to read anime manga, and of course the main function of a phone, sending messages and calling?

    • i would choose optimus black

      • Bok

hello! I’m planning to buy my first ever smartphone. However I’m torn between tons of different choices. I was hoping you can help me choose since you’ve already got the chance to review several smartphones out in the market today.
What I’m looking for a phone were this:
nice quality of pictures from camera
    awesome audio
    capable for reading ebooks
fast surfing on social media sites like twitter
By the way,Can instagrm run on android? That’s one of my favorite apps when I got the chance to borrow a friend’s phone. The quality ofpictures in instagrm really looks great.
I hope you’ll get the chance to answer my inquiry please! I really need help on buying a phone. Maybe this one would help too,I have exactly 20k budget only for a smartphone.

  • wonder

    I need help,I can’t make up my mind,should I buy Galaxy S+ or W?

    • jhed

i think you should go for galaxy W, cause of its cheaper price, with a higher performance,

  • AkoSikhim

Please help me choosing the best phone between LG Optimus Black and Samsung Galaxy W. Who among these two smartphones is more monster in overall specs.? Specially gaming. Please do help me guys. Thanks. 🙂

    • although mas malakas processor ng galaxy w, optimus black ain’t that bad anyway. i’d rather get the 4-inch screen of the optimus black for my gaming needs.

      • AkoSikhim

        Ow, I see.
If you don’t mind Mr. Calvin.
This is my follow-up question, regarding that 4inch screen of the Optimus Black, which among the two smartphone performs well? Which among these two is the best when it comes to overall aspects and performance? Specially in Gaming.

        • AkoSikhim

Let’s say that Optimus Black has a wider screen than the Galaxy W.
But like what i’ve said earlier. Which among this two performs well? Which among these two is the best when it comes to overall aspects and performance? Specially when it comes to gaming.

          • although mas malakas processor ng galaxy w, optimus black ain’t that bad anyway. i’d rather get the 4-inch screen of the optimus black for my gaming needs.

mas malakas ang processor ng galaxy w = better performance. by how much? I dunno, but not much. same 512MB RAM. both would perform almost equally with galaxy W having a tiny bit of advantage. so again… i would still choose optimus black for gaming just because of its 4-inch screen.

          • AkoSikhim

            Thank you sir.
Your opinion about who among these two smartphones performs well helps me a lot.
So, i would choose Optimus Black then, rather than Galaxy W.
            Thank you sir.
