Smart’s phone network overhaul now complete

Smart Communications recently announced that their nationwide mobile phone network overhaul has already been completed. What started in 2011 and had a target completion date of 2013, the program has been fast-tracked in anticipation of increased demand for mobile services, particularly wireless broadband.

9,500 base stations around the country has been upgraded to next-generation facilities that will increase the network’s voice, SMS, and mobile broadband capacity. Each of these new base stations are now easily upgradeable to HSPA+ and LTE when the need arises.

So what’s next for Smart? According to Smart president and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno, the next phase would be an upgrade in their support systems which will include new billing and customer management systems and also personnel re-training.

“Our goal is to make simple and easy for our customers to use our unmatched network infrastructure through innovative and flexible service packages and superior customer service,” said Orlando B. Vea, Smart’s chief wireless adviser.

  1. Hopefully, Smart flips the switch on LTE so Sony Philippines can gloat for having one of the only smartphones available locally through the Sony Ion that support those speeds, if at least for just a while.

  3. The question is … are we all sure that with the upgrade the internet speed performance will improve? An upgraded infra does not immediately translate to lightning fast speed … as Smart, and other telcos like to throttle the speed of its subscribers …subscribers rarely reach the max speed limit of current 3G offerings …

I’m not expecting a big improvement out of this infra upgrade by Smart.

    • i think what consumers would first aim for is consistency… i’ll choose good enough speeds but consistent everywhere i go than max speeds in just a few spots.

Kung yung other cities magsunuran tapos ganyan pa rin serbisyo nila then let’s see what will happen. :)
