Sony Launches PlayStation 4 in the Philippines

Sony finally launches the Sony PlayStation 4 in the Philippines today. Although Sony’s popular game console was launched mid-November of last year in North America and later on the same month in Europe and Latin America, the PlayStation 4 has not reached the Asian shores until the middle of December. However, Philippines was not among the first countries in the region to get first dibs of the PS3 successor. Instead Sony has put up pre-orders on selected Sony Centers in the country.

The pricing remains the same and Sony is still offering the Sony PlayStation 4 (console only) for Php 24,999 and Php 26,999 with the camera. Additionally, Sony has bundled 2 software titles with the PlayStation 4. PlayStation fans can get the PlayStation 4 console bundled with Battlefield 4 for Php 27,399 or with Killzone Shadow Fall for Php 26,999.

Each PlayStation 4 comes with one-year warranty coverage and Sony is offering an additional year for those who will purchase their PS4 today and tomorrow (January 15). Sony also announced a new regional warranty plan where customers can avail repair service on any of these South East Asian Countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Sony PlayStation 4 replaces the more than seven-year-old PlayStation 3 and presents a far superior system than its predecessor including deep social media integration such as the ability to broadcast gameplays on Ustream and Twitch and sharing game clips and screenshots to Twitter and Facebook. Along with the Sony PlayStation 4 also comes an ultra-modern DUALSHOCK 4 controller and a PlayStation camera.

Check out below for more photos and features of the Sony PlayStation 4.

Available in Jet Black, the Sony PlayStation 4 is slimmer and lighter than the PS3, measuring approx. 275 mm × 53 mm × 305 mm (WxHxL) and weighing approx. 2.8 kg. The PS4 has an eight core x86 cpu, 8GB GDDR5 RAM and a powerful graphics processor. It has a (replaceable) 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive and supports 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p video standards via HDMI output.

PlayStation 4 does not have an analog video or audio ouput and only uses HDMI and 5.1 optical digital out. In addition,  it has ethernet, 2 USB 3.0 ports and auxiliary connector for PlayStation camera. It has an integrated 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi  and Bluetooth 2.1 for connectivity.

A major letdown for the fanboys is the lack of backward compatibility for PS3 titles. Moreover, PS4 does not support audio CDs and won’t allow the use of external hard drives (for extra storage). However, users can download and install a software update to play Blu-ray and DVD videos.

DUALSHOCK 4 Controller

The DUALSHOCK 4 controller has a capacitive touch pad which allows you to click, drag and drop, flick and do multi-touch inputs. It has a light bar that sends game info to the console and is also used by the PlayStation camera to track movements and position.

The DUALSHOCK 4 controller has a Share button which allows users to share saved game clips or screencaps in Facebook or Twitter and broadcast games on Ustream and Twitch as well.

The PS4 can connect up to four DUALSHOCK 4 controllers at the same time. The DUALSHOCK 4 controller is also available in Magma Red and Wave Blue.

The PS4 also comes with a headset used for voice chats and voice commands

Playstation Camera

The PlayStation Camera uses two highly sensitive high cameras to track movements, positions and face recognition. The camera also has a microphone which is also used for voice chat and voice commands.

At the launch, a demo on the Augmented Reality (AR) technology feature of the camera was made using the Playroom featuring AR robot characters interacting with the player. They also showed an air hockey game which was played using the DUALSHOCK 4 controllers.
