Acer Aspire V5, 15-inch ultrathin gaming notebook now in AMD flavor

Dec 15, 12 Acer Aspire V5, 15-inch ultrathin gaming notebook now in AMD flavor

Posted by in Laptops & Tablets

When you think of gaming notebooks, you’ll often think of bulky 15-inchers that’s a pain to lug around with a body so warm you can use it to treat chronic back pains. Yesterday, Acer launched their AMD-powered Aspire V5 ultrathin gaming notebook which you might want to add to your Christmas shopping list. This notebook is outfitted with a quad-core AMD A8 processor with 4GB DDR3 RAM and runs on Windows 8 despite not having a touch-screen display. The 15.6-inch display on the Aspire V5 tops at 1366 x 768 resolution which makes it subpar for its screen size. It does have Acer’s CineCrystal technology to give it a high brightness. You will also appreciate its 23mm-thin profile and 2.3kg weight making it somewhat portable for a 15-incher. What’s hard to imagine is that despite its thin profile, this laptop is equipped with a 750GB HDD and an optical disc drive. It didn’t even heat up after running Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm straight for about 3 hours. What makes this a decent gaming notebook is the ability of its integrated graphics, AMD Radeon HD 7600G, and its discrete graphics, 7650M with 1GB VRAM, to work together for added performance boost. Usually, only the integrated or the discrete graphics does the work at any given time. Starcraft II: HoS was able to run at ultra-high settings with no stuttering. They backlit keyboard has a full-sized number pad which gamers will find useful and it also has a generous-sized touchpad which is 10% bigger than usual 15-inchers out there. The Acer Aspire V5 is also equipped with AMD’s new HD Media Accelerator for seamless seamless streaming of high-resolution video and hastens file conversion. They also demoed the Steady Video Technology which somehow straightens shaky playback of homemade video. This notebook also supports BIOS optimized solution, which makes the system easier to revive from sleep mode—in less than 2 seconds—and boot in about 14 seconds only. The Acer Aspire V5 is already available with an...

Acer Iconia W510, the Windows 8 tablet-netbook hybrid

Oct 27, 12 Acer Iconia W510, the Windows 8 tablet-netbook hybrid

Posted by in Laptops & Tablets

With the official launch of Window 8, we’re seeing a lot of tablet-notebook hybrids cropping up. Acer decided to test the netbook waters with Windows 8 using its own hybrid version, the Iconia W510 which is an Intel Atom-based 10-inch tablet that comes with a keyboard dock. While docked, the Acer Iconia W510 looks just like your typical 3-pounder netbook running on Windows 8. It is powered by an Intel Atom Z2760 1.5GHz dual-core processor which is specifically designed for Windows 8 tablets having Intel Burst and Intel Hyper-Threading technology that can be used with sleek and lightweight form factors. The tablet has a 10.1-inch 5-point multi-touch display with a 1366 x 768 resolution which is good for those Windows 8 tiles. It also has 2GB RAM, integrated Intel GMA which supports up to DirectX 9, 64GB embedded storage with microSD expansion support, an 8-megapixel rear camera plus a 2-megapixel front camera capable of 1080p video conferencing. The tablet is rated with 9 hours of battery life and another nine for the keyboard dock. The tablet portions docks sturdily on the keyboard so doing your touch gestures while docked won’t be an issue. Once docked, it automatically leeches of juice from the keyboard’s battery pack when required. They keyboard dock also has a USB 2.0 port so you can plug your external drives where you should be storing most of your files due to the limited storage on the W510. What’s unique with this tablet + keyboard dock setup is that you can rotate the tablet all the way outward with they keyboard flipping over so you’ll get a tablet-only stand. Small rubber pads are conveniently placed around the palm rest so that the keyboard won’t touch the surface of the table. The Acer Iconia W510 is set to be available next month with a price tag of Php29,900. I know it’s a bit too much for an Atom-based device but remember, you’ll get a tablet that transforms into a netbook here. Acer Iconia...

Acer officially launched Aspire S5 Core i7 Ultrabook

Yesterday at the Acer’s Tech Showcase 2012, the Aspire S5 Ultrabook finally made its official debut in the country. We got a sneak peek of this laptop a last April but the Aspire S5 is now official. The Aspire S5 is the second Ultrabook released here by Acer with the first one being the affordable Aspire S3. With the Aspire S5 though, Acer is going with more speed on this machine. Powering the Aspire s5 is Intel’s 3rd generation Core i7-3517U processor and a 4GB DDR3 RAM. Instead of using the same hybrid storage as the Aspire S3, the Aspire S5 is going pure SSD at 128GB. It will still have a 13.3″ Acer CineCrystal LED display featuring a 200-nit high brightness. What makes this Ultrabook unique is its hidden port design. Only ports seen on the side are the 3.5mm audio jack and the SD card reader. The rest are concealed at the back which is accessed by pressing a button (on the upper right side) to lift the back a bit to reveal the rest of the ports. Looks cute but might be troublesome in the long run that you’ll mostly leave it open. Anyway, the Acer Aspire S5 is now available and will retail for around Php65,000 making its market a bit exclusive. You’ll get a snazzy, slim and powerful Ultrabook in return though. Acer Aspire S5 Specs: 13.3″ LED display @ 1366×768 pixels, 200-nit Intel Core i7-3517U processor (1.9GHz, TurboBoost up to 3.0GHz) Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Intel HD 4000 Graphics 128GB RAID O SSD 4GB DDR3 RAM Acer InviLink Nplify WiFi 802.11 b/g/n Bluetooth 4.0 + HS 2 x USB 3.0 ports 1 x HDMI port 1 x Thunderbolt port 2-in-1 Card reader SRP: Php65,000 Related posts: First impressions: Acer Aspire S5...
