Do you remember getting forwarded hoax emails about VeriChip and how it is associated as the Mark of the Beast? This once rumored mark of the beast has been helping in the tracking of Hurricane Katrina victims according to a Yahoo Tech News story. Actually, it is the first time that VeriChip is being used in managing morgue cases.
VeriChip is the world’s first and only FDA-cleared (Food and Drugs Administration), human implantable RFID (radio frequency identification) microchip. It is about the size of a grain of rice. Each microchip has a unique verification number (hence, the name VeriChip). The microchips are said to be implanted in the corpse’s shoulder or put inside the body bag. Of course, this depends on the conditions of the remains that I do not intend to describe graphically. Plastic scanners, much like of a barcode scanner, are used to read the chips. Such technology has proven to be an accurate and a fast way of identifying the remains.
