VoIP in the Philippines

Like a typical Filipino abroad, one of the first in my list when I moved away was to look for options on how to keep in close contact with my family and friends… minus the burned holes in my pockets. To call direct from Germany using T-Online would have been affordable. That is, if I only called once a week, a few minutes at a time. And with T-Online’s rates, we would have only lasted until “O Kamusta ka na?”

Yahoo chat was an option that I used for some time. However, more often than not, we always ended up using the chat board due to our frustrations with all the crackling sounds and disconnections.

Thank God VoiP entered the picture.

VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol has made it possible to make a free (or low-cost, depending on the options you choose) phone call using the internet. Indeed, a manna from technology heaven.

As defined by Wikipedia, “VoIP (also called IP Telephony, and Internet telephony) is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP network. The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched network, instead of the traditional dedicated, circuit-switched voice transmission lines.”

There are several companies offering softphones or VoIP technology, targetting millions of Filipinos abroad and their families back home.

Join me as I (along with the other authors here) review the different VoIP providers available to Pinoys all over the world.

Heck, last I heard, even PLDT wants to join the fray.

  1. Hi,

We are a beginner in asterisk ipbx in cebu and we are succesful with our installation.Anyone who is interested with our setup pls contact me at agbay72@gmail.com or txt. me 09263697594 so you can actually test our set-up.

  2. There is a company that offers unlimited calls from Australia to Manila for a flat rate of $25AUD p/month. No internet connection needed on either end. All you pay is the local call connection cost to an Australian number.

What do you think? Not bad?

  3. For US callers to the Philippines UNLIMITED,
no connection fee, no pin code

Voip Videophone you can see the person you are talking to on the phone screen.

especially, for OFWs the concept of seeing their children and their family anytime they want.

It works just like Vonage you get charged $23.99 a month

and since you’re issued a US phone number, you can call anyone

in the US and Canada regardless of their phone provider they don’t

need a videophone to talk to you and the fee stays $23.99. You can take

the VIDEOPHONE with you and as long as there is a high speed internet plug it in
and make US and Canada calls.

You can have the service and save alot of money or become an Independent Rep.
and make alot of money. I think this is a life changing opportunity that no one should
    pass up.
    Any questions,email me : gerlynbates@yahoo.com

Please guide me as I will be needing VOIP for my small business. i’m not a techy person and i honestly don’t have in depth knowledge about VOIP. how do we go about it? can you give me a contact number of yours so we can discuss it? aica615@yahoo

  5. Any suggestions as to what broadband provider and plan is adequate for making voip business quality calls from a PC in Philippines to a phone in Canada/US?

I have tried PLDT DSL Plan 999PHP (1 Mbps), voice quality was ok but latency was 400 to 1000+ ms delay. Also tried Smartbro which had lower latency (250 ms), but was very choppy sounding. Test calls were made using http://www.iCalls.com

i am looking for a voip solution.
something like a payphone that uses voip.
or a phone and billing solution to which we could use skype or similiar and charge a customer to make a call.

  7. Where in the Philippines… Preferably in Cebu, can I find a VOIP receiver. Like a USB phone or something. I use SmartBRO and have no landline in my house, but would like to set-up a Skype account and maybe a US Phone number so I can also receive calls.

    Thanks

  8. Try a Magic Jack at MagicJack.com. It has to be shipped to a USA address but for only $39.95 it includes the first years service and you can pay an additional $19.95 for the second year if you want then you get two years service for the what a couple of months with some other VOIP systems would cost you, it is a great inexpensive VOIP system. I bought one and have a USA phone number and have been using it for weeks now and it works great and I intend on using it in other counties while I travel with my laptop.

  9. if anyone is interested to call the US for only 1php/min kindly send me an email piso rates apply in 30 countries the most cheapest among voip’s…we’re realizing the voip promise…contact me and you’ll be amazed…be connected with your loveones, colleagues or friends from anywhere in the world.

  23. jun_j;
    how do you do it?

  24. EVS

If you know how to comfigure a softphone or an ATA (analog telephone adaptor) voip adaptor or voip hardware you can forward a telephone number from a particular country to a specific devise let say Ill get a number from a specific country likesay USA UK etc. then Ill forward all call to that number to a VOIP devise much like inbound call centers …if someone call me from USA or UK from that number My devise (VOIP) will ring anywhere in the Philippine or from any country for that matter …You can say what the heck forwarding calls to a USA number when you can forward toll free number to your Philippine telephone number… my answer is we can change USA telephone number for free anythime and every time we can even forward a hundred number from different country to a single voip at will anytime everytime (some country like the philippine dont give free telephone numbers but some country do)so if someone or some company will give you a telephone number from a particular country (even for a trial period)..a number that can be forwarded to another number in another country you can have a virtual presence from that country for free…and even if that company will only allow you 10 day trial period to use that forwarding capability who will stop you from registering multiple account to use their system…..

  25. Alas PLDT joining the VOIP band openly by offering pldt (t@#$%^&d) at call cost of 1peso per minute sana nuon pa anyway dahil doon sa kanilang (p@#$%^&+s) prepaid sim kahit sino na pwedeng mag lagay ng voip gateway saan mang probinsya na may coverage biruin mo kailangan mo lang ng sim card at (XXX) terminal OK na!…..eh ganoon din singil 1 peso/min.
1 sim card per probinsya na kailangan mo basta sasagap …..example nasa laguna ka kailanggan mo ng manila number lagay mo lang sa parte ng laguna yung (XXX) terminal mo na makakaregister yon doon sa cell site na pang manila pwede na link mo lahat ng call na pang manila from VOIp kahit sa probinsya ka tapos yung ibang port para sa laguna local ….O de bale youll be hitting 2 bird with one stone na kasing laki ng boulder!….**(@#$%)was put up to protect voip imformation**

Momentum Plus? they don’t have customer/technical support. The company as I understood is pure maketing, they don’t have network infrastructure.Check their website, looks like a grocery store. Well, who cares about network, right? but if you like this kind of service and way of communications then just use your computer, internet is free, right? then why paying $4.95 a month? This company is well structured for network maketing. Their not even a voip provider.Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong in the said company, what I’m trying to say is,they provide the unit but not the service. Why not just use the internet, same thing no tecnical or customer support.
    Just a thought

  28. I just have a question since I read most of you use skype. I recently installed skype but unfortunately when i tried to create my account and sign in my modem auto restarts and unless I quit all skype applications, i cant connect back to to the internet. I hope y’all can help

  29. Hi! VOIP is a new way technology now to save phone bills especially if you are calling other countries. My parents are working abroad and you just can’t imagine how much they spent for their calls from Italy to Philippines. Good thing my uncle based in Belgium is using Nomado Phone. This is a VOIP phone as well. What my parents did was they set up Nomado accounts for us here in the Philippines and they can call us anytime, and my mom said they are just paying a flat rate for that. I am not sure the flat rate though. But you could check their website,www.nomado.eu my bro got it, he’s going to ask his gf too to get Nomado phone in UK.

  30. why get a nomado account when you can have any number like rome milan turin etc land line phone number forwarded to an ATA devise what more is “ITS FREE” your relative can call you the same way as NOMADO account but they dont have to pay for anything and so do you

  31. i need to buy a SIP IP PHONE in Manila..Do anybody know where to purchase such unit?

also is it PLDT using ISTN (International Switch Digital Network) or PSTN (analog) – Public Switch Telephone Network.

would appreciate very much your info. tnx!

  32. for me the best in vonage. We have it connected to a device called dialmate. this allows us to call the philippines from the states and vice versa. It’s 20 dollars a month for the service but because of the dialmate device we’re able to share the device with our relatives in the US and Canada and our relatives here. they simply call the US or philippine number and after inputting a pin code they get the dial tone of the other country. The quality is good and we’re very happy with our set up that we’ve purchased a second one.
We also have the magic jack. It’s great for mobility if you travel a lot but quality isn’t as good as the one of vonage plus there’s a delay. i’ve also read reviews about it burning out usb ports. it hasn’t happened to me though.
so i recommend vonage with the dialmate. then you can share it with several people to make the cost almost nonexistent. plus vonage allows free unlimited calls to uk italy france and other countries as well. singapore can be called for 1 US cent a minute which makes it very convenient for any long distance calling.

  33. A company which is offering unlimited calling to the Philippines using SUN celular and bayantel is Telepinas (www.telepinas.com). Unlike other VOIP providers, an internet connection is NOT required and NO other VoIP equipment is required either.

telepinas maps a local SUN or bayantel number to a US/Canada number. they can also map a local US/Canada number to a SUN or metro manila land line.

  35. anybody heard about the company magic jack. You pay only $20 for ayear. It is on tv every night. It works pretty good. I bought 2 already.

  38. Has anyone tried sms4voip.com ?
I dont really understand what it is – they have very low prices, and it works from all mobiles they say – but how can anyone call by using sms ?

  39. I used to call with pre-paid service and I will spend about $150 a month! I’m not kidding.. I just talk too much to my family and keeeping in touch with my sickly mom by phone. So the last 2 months I have been researching for a good unlimited calling plan to the Philippines. I have tried VOIP but as you know you need to have an internet connection and my sickly mom doesn’t have an access to internet, I prefer to call her thru landline. Soo.. I tried telepinas and for some reason I always have a problem with their connections.. especially if you’re calling a Sun CellPhone and you can only call to one phone line. Then just last week a friend of mine told me about Proxy numbers so I signed up as distributor coz it’s cheaper than signing up just a customer. I am very happy with the service and I can call anywhere in Asia unlimited!! I’m not advertising and I’m sharing this with you what a wonderful service this is… So if you talk as much as I do.. then this is the right plan for you. check it out thru my website as distributor, at least I get lil money if you decided to sign up. That will help me alot since my husband been unemployed :( . But it is great service! just make sure if you sign up you’ll see my name and sponsor ID. http://www.goproxycomm.com/callpinas

Thank you and let me know what you think! Feel free to contact me.. you will see my contact info on the website and you know i’m not a scammer! Thanx Guys!

  40. I found this company based in the philippines. As far as i know sila ang may pinakamurang per minute rates to destinations worldwide. They provided me a landline phone to go with the service. email them at info@webfuzion.net to know about their packages.

  41. I take what I posted on June 13, 2009. I said some good things about proxycomm.com but unfortunately they increased the rate and they put a limit of how many minutes you can call Philippines and they took off the cellphones.. meaning you can’t call Philippine mobile phones.. strictly for landlines. So I canceled my subscription and you should not sign up for it. Im using prepaid now coz the connection is better than proxycomm.com. There’s a 5-10 seconds delay when you use proxycomm to call someone. if you don’t believe and you have extra $100 to waste then try it.

  42. that’s cool.. can i all cellfon from manila using voip?

  43. Try nyo rin po ito http://www.yupeephone.com?a_aid=ppeso cheaper than skype.

  44. i already tried it and it very clear VOIP

Cheaper pa ang call rate to call mobile or landline
    http://www.yupeephone.com?a_aid=ppeso cheaper than

  45. theres a new system n pwede k n tumawag abroad just by using your wireless landline…no computer or internet needed, cheaper p ang rates

or if u want to avail the unlimited calls abroad up to 38 countries, reply to this post, i’ll be visiting this blog everyday
