What’s new with the BlackBerry 7.1 OS?

Aside from announcing on what RIM is up to with their BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 software update, the company also announced the availability of the new BlackBerry 7.1 OS. Owners of BlackBerry phones with OS 7 will be interested to learn what 7.1 brings them.

2012 BlackBerry Phones

Here are the new features of the BlackBerry 7.1 OS:

  • WiFi Hotspot. Probably, the most exciting feature is that BB’s running on 7.1 will now be able to share their mobile’s internet connection via WiFi to up to 5 devices (not necessarily BBs). The iPhone has this since iOS 5 while Android phones have this feature for a long time. What’s nice with BlackBerry is that BIS is relatively cheaper than regular data plan so in effect, sharing a BB’s internet would be more affordable in the long run. Of course, telcos still have the last say whether this feature will be enabled or if they will be charging extra to BB users who wants to use their phone as a mobile hotspot.
  • WiFi Calling. BlackBerry’s answer to those VoIP apps is WiFi Calling which allows you to make calls from your BB using WiFi. It’s not as simple as it seems because it uses a carrier’s WiFi calling service which is something we haven’t heard of yet in this part of the world. This is a wait and see feature for local subscribers.
  • BlackBerry Tag. Using the power of NFC or Near-Field-Communications, BlackBerry Tag lets you share contacts, media and files, and even invite friends to BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) by just touching your phone to another BlackBerry.
  • Improved BlackBerry Maps. It’s no secret that Google Maps is better than BlackBerry Maps which is powered by Bing. To add more functionality to BlackBerry Maps, RIM added some location-awareness feature to it. With the new BlackBerry Maps, you can discover special offers, coupons and discounts from nearby vendors based on your location. We still have to find out though if this would be applicable here in the Philippines right from the get-go.
  • FM Radio. Wow, I didn’t notice that BlackBerry phones don’t have FM radios built-in. However, with 7.1, two phones will be having that feature, the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and 9380 which already has FM radio built-in, the new OS just gives them the app to use it. All you need is to plug in your headphones to use it.

So what do you think, BlackBerry 7 users? Exciting updates?

  1. wala pa po bang balita tungkol sa battery issues ng mga bagong models tulad nun curve 9360?

    • at stock rom (the one you get otb, 7.0319 AFAIK) then you will face battery problems and heating

but if you upgrade the os to 7.0594 then battery life improves greatly and no more heating issues

defiitely this 7.1 update will be even better than 7.0594

    • thank you sa info Paul. nag babalak kasi ako kumuha ng blackberry and was worried tungkol sa mga nabasa ko earlier tungkol sa 9360 and other new models.

      • Youre welcome. I actually bought the same 9360 recently after learning the 594 OS did wonders. I was hesitant too after reading so many users complaining about 4-6 hours battery life using BIS services. One commented on normal use it would last 2 days but whats the point in having a BB if you dont register to BIS services. It would be pointless if you got a BB and used it only for calls and SMS. 594 is really good, battery life way better, could last me 30-48 hours using BIS. The leaked 7.1 OS is better so i am sure the official 7.1 would do wonders

        • actually ive been through that too. complaining about the battery life, 6-8 hours of ‘moderate use’..what I do is to put the network mode to 3g&2g so my phone goes 2g when im not using it. in fact. I normally put it in 2g now as it works fine nmn with bb,facebook,twitter,email.. narereceive ko nmn sya ng normal with 2g mode.i only put in on 3g kapag urgent na need ko mag browser, ung tipong kelangan tlga… so with that.tumatagal ung 9900 ko ng 14-15 and im glad with it.. finally I got through it.complaining bout the battery life..am cool now. lol

  2. In the picture, what model is the last one to the right?

  19. MistahcLue says:

Mobile Hotspot comes with the new OS. you just need to configure your TCP options then activate Mobile Hotspot ( you will be prompted for options)

  20. Apn settings enabled dapat… Apn http.globe.com.ph then contakin mo globe, ako sa twitter ko kinontak… Sabihin mo update nila subscription mo kasi ayaw gunana ng mobile tethering… Wag mo sabihin hotspot kasi di ka nila papansinin kasi pang postpaid lang yun… Sabihin mo tethering, pag inupdate na nila gagana na mobile hotspot…

  25. Is there an available OS 7.1 for 9380 here in pinas? I only have 4-6 hours battery life using it with BIS. How will I get through this? :(

  26. how about for 9810 pwd na ba mag updated ng OS to 7.1

  27. pano mag upgrade to os 7.1 for 9360? wala sa desktop manager na 7.1

  28. Hi! I just bought my 9360 2 days ago, and i have to agree with all others, the battery life is not that good. So, from what i read, if the OS is 7.1 the battery life is much more cooler than OS 7. Is this OS available for upgrade in my bb 9360? in with Globe prepaid. Thank you! :)

  29. Hi! Nagbrick/nuke po ba ang BB Bold 9900 nyo nung inupdate nyo to this latest OS?
