Nokia and Alcatel to merge companies this year

Following news updates that Nokia is gearing up to sell its HERE mapping business, the Finnish giant has now confirmed that it will merge with French company Alcatel-Lucent to create an IP-connecting world. A new press release posted today on Nokia’s website sees the finalization of the new deal to go through and will be expected to close in the first half of 2016. Transaction highlights include purchase of the French company valued at EUR 15.6 billion, with Nokia owning 66.5% of the total company shares. The new company will be called Nokia Corporation and will still be based in Finland. Here is the statement from Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri: “Together, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia intend to lead in next-generation network technology and services, with the scope to create seamless connectivity for people and things wherever they are. Our innovation capability will be extraordinary, bringing together the R&D engine of Nokia with that of Alcatel-Lucent and its iconic Bell Labs. We will continue to combine this strength with the highly efficient, lean operations needed to compete on a global scale. We have hugely complementary technologies and the comprehensive portfolio necessary to enable the internet of things and transition to the cloud.  We will have a strong presence in every part of the world, including leading positions in the United States and China. Together, we expect to have the scale to lead in every area in which we choose to compete, drive profitable growth, meet the needs of global customers, develop new technologies, build on our successful intellectual property licensing, and create value for our shareholders. For all these reasons, I firmly believe that this is the right deal, with the right logic, at the right time.” This new development comes after a Bloomberg report published earlier today, citing the two companies are in ‘advanced talks’ over a possible full merger which includes purchasing Alcatel-Lucent’s core networking, wireless, and fixed-line access equipment businesses in an attempt to compete with Swedish rival Ericsson. In separate, identical statements yesterday, both companies confirmed the...

Instagram adds Post Notifications, Color and Fade features

Apr 15, 15 Instagram adds Post Notifications, Color and Fade features

Posted by in Android, iOS, OS and Apps

Loving your Instagram? A new update has revealed additional features that arrived at the popular photo-sharing app, including two new power tools to create more stunning photographs. A new Instagram update added three new additional features. User Post Notifications, for one, notifies you everytime a user posts a new photo, which can be seen as pretty useful for those who are following celebrities and creatives. To activate, simply click on the menu, and toggle click on ‘Turn on Post Notifications’. In addition to Post Notifications, Instagram also added Color and Fade, new tools to create more stunning photographs. Color lets you tint highlights and shadows in one of eight sampled colors. To use, simply tap Shadows or Highlights below the image you’re editing, then choose a color. You can use one color for Shadows and Highlights each. Meanwhile, Fade “allows you to bring a quiet tone to your photos by softening colors”, according to Instagram. This gives photos a retro-polaroid style, often achieved with other photo editing tools. The new features will be present on the new Instagram for Android version 6.19.0, now available on Google Play, and Instagram for iOS version 6.10.0, to be available in a few days in Apple’s App Store. Sharp unveils 5.5-inch 4K IGZO display for mobile devices

Apr 14, 15 Sharp unveils 5.5-inch 4K IGZO display for mobile devices

Posted by in Tech News

Is 2K not enough for you? 4K screens may be forthcoming. Japanese tech manufacturer Sharp just upped the mobile display ante by introducing a 5.5-inch, 4K-resolution IGZO display. Yep, that screen’s sporting a 3840×2160 resolution, amounting to 806ppi. It’s pretty mind-blowing to have that kind of screen display since the standard ones we see are mostly 1080p Full HD and, recently, 2K displays. As to why this kind of resolution will prove to be beneficial to smartphones, it can be able to reproduce 4K video content pixel for pixel, which means extremely sharp and detailed visuals are blasted at a close distance. Not only that, VR experiences are getting better as 4K screens greatly enhanced pixel density, thereby removing the screen-door effect. We can never say the same about the battery life, which will be the main con if ever smartphones are equipped with this kind of resolution. Sharp announced that the 5.5-inch 4K display will enter mass production next year. Via Related posts: No related...

Asus may toughen up the smartwatch competition as it is set to announce the Vivowatch, boasting a ten-day battery over a single charge, at an international design conference this week. The new fitness-centric wearable is equipped with a tough stainless steel body, sleep tracking and heart monitoring features. This, also, may not run on the much-favored Android Wear platform as it sports a black and white e-ink display, and a green LED notification light strip below it. On top of that, the wearable has an IP67 rating which shuts out dust and gives the device water resistance of up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. The Vivowatch is connected to your phone via Bluetooth for relaying notifications and other information. The Asus Vivowatch is said to be pegged at a price between $100 and $150 (Php4500 to Php6700) when it comes out in stores. via Engadget Related posts: No related...
