Five Must-have Windows Apps for Rainy Season

Rainy days are here again. For us living and working in the metro, this translates to battling with the hassles and inconveniences brought about by floods and heavy traffic when traveling or commuting. In line with this, we share with you some handy Windows apps to help you through the daily grind on this rainy season MMDA – For the Manileños, heavy rain is synonymous to heavy traffic. Steer clear of traffic jams by planning your route wisely with the MMDA app. The app gives you accurate and on-the-dot traffic situation of Manila’s most travelled roads, including EDSA, C5, SLEX, Roxas Blvd, Ortigas, Commonwealth, Marcos Highway, Katipunan, España, & Quezon Ave. The app also provides information on traffic rules and a comprehensive directory of important emergency contacts such as accredited towing companies to call for roadside assistance. Download the MMDA App for Windows here. Waze – As for those roads that are not covered by the MMDA, there is always Waze. Waze is a reliable, community based mapping, traffic & navigation app that helps drivers outsmart traffic, save time, gas money, and improve daily commuting for all. By simply driving around with Waze open, you’re already contributing tons of real-time traffic & road info to your local driving community. Users can also actively report accidents, hazards (including floods), police and other events you see on the road, and get road alerts on your route too. Waze is all about contributing to and benefiting from the ‘common good’ on the road. Download Waze App for Windows here. Philippine Hotlines –The rainy season may sometimes cause a series of inconveniences. Stay prepared for what may come your way by bringing along important telephone numbers where ever you go. Philippine Hotlines contains numbers for important Philippine Government Agencies such as PAGASA, PNP, MMDA, among others. Since the app is meant to be used offline, you don’t need to connect to the Internet to search for phone number because numbers have already been stored on your phone. Download Philippine...

Audio Technica ES500 Headphones Review

Aug 03, 14 Audio Technica ES500 Headphones Review

Posted by in Audio & Video, Featured, Gadgets, Reviews

I’m about to introduce the younger sibling of the ATH-ES700. You can read more about the ATH-ES700 here. At first glance, you won’t notice any difference between the two as they are almost built the same. The major difference being that the ES500 is powered by smaller 40 mm drivers. Obviously built for listening on-the-go as the ES500 is lighter than the ES700 by 40g. It’s seriously lightweight that bringing it on your daily commute is a delight. Clamping force is enough for it to not fall off your head without being too tight. The earpad’s pleather is the same material with the ES700 and is comfortable. One difference is also the headband doesn’t have a thick padding like that of the ES700, but it’s weight compensates for the comfort you’ll miss from the padding. The 40mm drivers feel a bit lacking on the low-end and high-end spectrum, but the vocals are spot on and surprisingly, the sound stage is wide on these ones. I’m not a fan of booming bass, but this one really lacks in the bass department. I tested the ES500 with Sitti’s Café Bossa album. The vocals are crystal clear and you can identify the extra set of percussions on the set, but disappoints on the low end. Tried a few rock songs with Razorback’s Star album, the riffs are able to compensate the lack of bass and the separation of the instruments provide the listener a wide sound stage that doesn’t drown the vocals. Pop songs that are vocal heavy do shine on the ES500, but for a few bucks more, I’d suggest to grab the big brother, which is the ES700. Now for the price range, there are better choices than the ATH-ES500 as I find its performance really lacking maybe in an effort to breach the entry-level market space. But I think the ES700 is the better one in terms of price/performance ratio. Audio Technica ES500 Specifications: Type: Closed-back, dynamic Driver: 40mm Freq. Response: 10 – 25,000...

Audio Technica ES700 Headphones Review

Aug 03, 14 Audio Technica ES700 Headphones Review

Posted by in Audio & Video, Gadgets, Reviews

Following the success of the ATH-ES7, Audio Technica ups the ante with the ATH-ES700. It’s made of stainless steel and a minimalist enough headband for bringing it on the road. The closed back design makes it suitable for commuting as it blocks out most of the noise and wouldn’t bother people next to you on the train with what you’re listening to. The first thing you’ll notice when comparing the ES700 to the ES7 is the improvement they made on the head pad. The thicker and softer headband makes long listening sessions a delightful experience. The pleather on the ear pads is also very comfortable. The ES700 weighs in at 160g, and it feels like you’re not wearing one at all. The clamping force is also pretty light but enough for it to be stable on your head while moving. The ES700 is powered by 42 mm drivers, which delivers an expanded audio range, more specifically in the lower end. I find the ES700’s bass response a bit more pronounced but not much as to drown the mids and the highs. Listening to the re-mastered version of Bob Marley & The Wailers, you get a wide range of its performance. From the percussions to the vocals, everything was balanced and the bass has got that satisfactory boom. The ES700 is capable of delivering a wide range of genre but the sound stage may be a little tight to some, which is expected for closed-back design headphones. I gave it a go with Dream Theater’s Images and Words and Metropolis Part I blew me away. Each section was delivered clear and spaced. Now I guess, where the ES700 really shines is when I started to listen to Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. Pharrell Williams’ vocals really shine on these cans combined with the tight bass, it’s an experience like no other. It seems that the weakness of the ES700 is with the high frequencies. I played Kenny G.’s Breathless album, and the highs seem just...

Audio Technica A700x Headphones Review

Aug 03, 14 Audio Technica A700x Headphones Review

Posted by in Audio & Video, Featured, Gadgets, Reviews

Warning: these headphones can be a gateway to the expensive world of audiophile equipment. If you’re looking for a balanced signature sound without breaking your bank, the A700x is a great way to start your venture in the Audiophile world. The A700x is not that hard to power but an amp can greatly improve its performance, too bad I don’t have a portable amp here with me. Playing these from my desktop’s built-in sound card, they provide ample volume for you to enjoy your music with much less distraction from outside noise. Using it with an iPod Touch 5th gen also produces the same volume. Despite having a closed-back design, the A700x’s sound stage is wide. It’s all thanks to the 53mm driver that’s also used in Audio Technica’s AD700, which on the contrary, is more open. Despite the huge drivers, the A700x is unbelievably light at 290g. You won’t have any problems with long listening sessions with these cans. The A700x produces a warm and bright signature sound. Listening to reggae tracks definitely puts me in a calm and relaxing mood. The sound stage is wide enough, you’ll forget that you’re using a closed-back headphone. The highs and mids are bright and warm especially when listening to classical music and jazz. The instruments are greatly differentiated especially when listening to a live recording of a concert. The bass is not that pronounced, but it provides the oomph to harmonically blend with the guitar tracks. The A700x will definitely fulfill a budding audiophile’s need. For the price, you definitely won’t go wrong with these cans. Comfortable, stylish, excellent sound quality, at a price that won’t have you breaking the bank. Audio Technica A700x Specifications: Type: Closed-back, dynamic, double air damping system Driver: 53mm Freq. Response: 5 – 35,000 Hz Max. Input Power: 1,000 mW Sensitivity: 100 dB/mW Impedance: 38 ohms Weight: 290g Cable: 3.0m cloth sheath (OFC) Accessories: Detachable ¼” (6.3mm) adapter Audio Technica A700x has an SRP of Php 10,499 Related posts: Logitech...
