Palit ATI Radeon HD4870 X2 Preview
We got our hands on the latest and fastest GPU card from AMD/ATI — the Palit ATI Radeon HD4870 X2 at 512-bit with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM. This GPU has 2 x 956 million transistors and uses the 55nm process.
Here’s what you’ll get with this humongous video card:
- 2 x800 stream processors
- 750MHz core clock speed
- 900MHz (3600MHz data rate) GDDR5 memory clock
- 2×256-bit memory bus width
- 2x1GB memory buffer

The Radeon 4870 X2 (codenamed R700) is a pair of RV770 GPUs on a single card. It’s like getting the Crossfire feature with a single Radeon 4870. The X2 signifies you’re getting two for a device.

We managed to build a complete rig with this one alogn with an AMD Phenom 9950 X4 and a Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H. Results can be seen here along with a complete list of materials used.
Retail price of the 4870 X2 is around Php28,000 while the single CPU 4870 with 512MB GDDR5 is about half at P14,000. These GPUs are for enthusiasts and ultra-enthusiast gamers out there so that explains the pricing.
