Alcatel launches Glory X 918N and Sapphire HD Android smartphones

Last Friday, Alcatel held an event where they unveiled two of their latest Android offerings along with a Hunger Games movie treat. These phones will be joining Alcatel’s one touch phone series and will be available in the country this coming April.

Alcatel One Touch Glory X 918N

The first phone introduced is the Alcatel One Touch Glory X 918N. It is pretty much the same dual SIM phone as its predecessor, the Glory 918N in both looks and specs. What is unique about this phone though is its interchangeable casing that comes in black blue and red. The rep told me however that the packaging will only include two casings with a choice of either black and blue, or black and red. The phone runs with the Gingerbread version of Android and a slightly altered skin. The icons in the app drawer remind me of the Nokia N9’s rounded square icons.  The Glory X 918N, with its dual SIM and colorful casings in tow, will be available for Php6,199.00.

Alcatel One Touch Glory X 918N Specs:

  • GSM Quad band (1900/850/1800/900)
  • 650MHz processor, MTK 6573 chipset
  • 3.2″ HVGA, 320 x 480 pixels, TFT 262k color display, Capacitive touch

  • 3.0 Megapixel camera, VGA video recording @30fps
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, hot spot
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP

  • Micro SD (up to 32GB)
  • Dual SIM Dual Standby

Alcatel One Touch Sapphire HD 995

The other device launched in the event is the Alcatel One Touch Sapphire HD 995. This beast of a phone boasts of a 1.4 Ghz CPU and a 4.3″ WVGA capacitive screen. It runs with Android 2.3 and utilizes Alcatel’s one touch UI that implements a 3d carousel view of your home screens akin to the SPB 3D launcher. Personally, I really liked the Sapphire HD. The interface was smooth, the hardware is not too big for my taste and for the retail price of Php 13,999 the specs are not bad at all. What is really surprising here is for that price, it also has a lot of features present (or not present) in most high-end Android devices that is double its price.

Alcatel One Touch Sapphire HD 995 Specs:

  • Single core 1.4 GHz processor, Qualcomm MSM8255
  • 4.3″ WVGA, 480 x 800 pixels, TFT, IPS, 16M colour display
  • 3D UI launcher
  • Internal memory 16G/4G(EMMC 2GB, 512MB RAM)
  • 1GB end user memory

  • [email protected] video recording
  • HSPA+ 14.4 Mbps downlink, 5.76 Mbps uplink

The Hspa+ is a winner for its low price, the rest of the specs are major pluses! Hope the battery is ok too!

I owned the Alcatel OT-980 before and the only gripe I have about it, along with most Android phones, is if it can be upgraded to the latest Android version (this is more relevant to the Sapphire HD unit as I don’t think the 650MHz can support ICS, but I really don’t know). Other than that, and IMHO, the phone has a good build.

I am planning to get my wife an OT-918N. Is the interchangeable casing the only difference between this and the Glory X?

  • JmBalicano

The HD in Sapphire HD probably refers to the video recording. Can’t be the screen coz it’s only 800×480.

2 extra colored casings and a slightly altered skin already merits an ‘X’ designation and an additional P200? Kinda underwhelming. That Mediatek CPU/chipset underachieves. Wish they also bumped up the specs to an 800mhz CPU & chipset/GPU with Adobe Flash support, then pegged it at just under 8K.

  • redmd

    LPS? What’s that?

    • it should be IPS sorry.

  • foxhole

Does sapphire hd has flash support???

  • saan store available ito? sabi kasi sa sm nort isang concept store ng alcatel hindi pa daw na release? kelan eksangtong date release neto? gusto ko na kasi bumili eh. hehehe

  • Griswold

is it just me or does that sapphire hd look like the htc sensation up front?

  • Primon

Just took the plunge yesterday and brought home the alcatel ot 995. It’s quite impressive. So far my only gripe, being a single core unit, you have to squeeze out available ram (usually 320 max). Im using an app called autokiller memory to prevent lagging.

No much problem with the 2 gb internal ram since the unit and the unit and the gingerbread os supports app 2 sd. I dunno if this will be the case if and when ICS support for this comes out.

Minimalistic design + an ample 1.4 ghz processor + dual cam + hdmi out support= good buy.

Btw i noticed that some games lag like angry birds space & running fred, but overall the sapphire delivers.

I’m still on the lookout how to root this baby and see it’s max potential.

    • Griswold

Did the games always lag? Or sa simula lang? I think it has something to do with the limited ram din.

    • rin

hi! how is ur front cam for the alcatel-995? is it way too dark even when on well-lighted and bright rooms? thanks!

  • wendy

Why I should root my alcatel glory x?
I just bought it yesterday at SM North,,,and its WoW for me as first time android phone user.

  • paulito

about this glory x, i just got one last tym, is it normal na umiinit yung battery nya?

  • Hi! I have a question regarding Alcatel OneTouch Glory X. Does the touch buttons (back, search, and menu) have a backlight like the home button? Because the one my mom has doesn’t and I was wondering if it’s defective so that we can send it back to Sun Cellular the soonest possible.

    • CuriousGuy

I guess meron iyan, baka po nasa maliwanag na lugar kayo kaya naka-off. Ang alam ko po kasi ay may light sensor iyan, once na ma-detect nya na maliwanag ang paligid ay i-o-off nito ang backlight ng buttons. 🙂

Try using that phone in dark room, kapag wala pa ding ilaw, that’s the queue to return it to sun cellular. 🙂

    • Nope, there is no backlight on those button. Only the home button has.

    • gg

      only home botton

  • hahahaha

  • Aldrin

san ba nakakabili ng housing ng glory?

  • Patricia

    • Jan papasok ang rooting sir. With rooting, you can map your internal memory to your SD card para di ka na limited and sa resource.

      • thaudio

how can we contact you i need to root my 995 though ive read in some thread that rooting can be dangerous coz it may destroy the fones systems and worst is it may damage it all the way. A little piece of advice here sir.

  • how to turn off the sound of the camera in glory X?

  • Cherry-kuns

Root mu ung phone, then access system/media/audio/ui then rename mu extension ng cameraclick.ogg to .bak.
