eBay to Buy Skype for $2 Billion

Could this be the perfect solution to both their problems? eBay desperately looking to increase revenues and Skype, well looking for a “fair” early retirement package (now that Google, Yahoo and MSN are greedily looking at VOIP)

The Wall Street Journal story was carried by Reuters:

EBay Inc. is in talks to acquire Internet-telephone company Skype Technologies SA for between $2 billion (1.1 billion pounds) and $3 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

I think $2 billion is a fair market price for a company which WSJ said in 2003 wouldn’t make it.

  • Where is the synergy between auctions and VoIP? Guess eBay is just looking at a financial investment for their spare cash.

  • Am not sure how to look at it, to be honest. I mean, it’s a huge financial investment for eBay. Like really huge. Maybe they want to do something with it. I have no idea… Cash in on the services? Add better services to their community of users? *shrugs*

  • Synergy? Baka now I can bid the old fashion way…instead of clicking, I’m on a telecon with the auctioneer? hehe 🙂

After Yahoo, Google, and Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp., Skype’s now courting eBay. Who’s next? Microsoft? Skype’s revenue stream is no different from an ordinary VoIP company. A typical VoIP company has little infrastructure and so does Skype. What they have mostly are agreements and partnerships interconnecting with other VoIP originators and terminators, many of which are clandestine operators.

Conference call is ongoing. Looks like eBay’s purchase of Skype is about to happen.

  • auctions + voip… there is indeed a relationship. like any other business, voip is a trading game too. this may not be obvious to the user, it is the heart of the business side of the technology.

  • It’s official. A whooping $2.6b.
