Have you updated your Samsung Galaxy phones to Gingerbread yet?

Samsung Galaxy users, have you updated your phone to Gingerbread yet? The Android 2.3.4 update has been available for the past couple of weeks already but we just got our  Samsung Galaxy Ace updated today.

If you remember, it was way back in May when Samsung announced the Gingerbread update for their phones. Aside from the Galaxy Ace, this update also affects the Samsung Galaxy Fit, Samsung Galaxy Mini and the Galaxy Gio and Tab. That’s a long wait but at least it’s here. You may need to update your Samsung Kies before doing this upgrade.

The upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread 2.3 gives the following:

  • Faster Performance ““ Multimedia content now has a lower CPU consumption rate, while support for more powerful 3D Graphics enables an enhanced mobile gaming experience.
  • Upgraded Usability ““ The user interface has been improved, enabling faster access and control and a more intuitive user experience. Users will also benefit from improved copy-and-paste functionality.

We haven’t found any noticeable improvements yet on the Galaxy Ace but I hope it will fix the sudden crashing of the phone where you need to do a battery pull to turn it back on.

Update away guys and let us know if you notice anything with new with it.

  • The crash that you mentioned is called the “Sleep Of Death” or SOD. It happens when you have your WiFi turned on your device and it is no longer in range of the current connection. Also sometimes applies to the Bluetooth radio being inactive for some time. You do not need to pull the battery off, just long press the power button for 10-20 seconds or so, the device will reboot.

There has been a fix for this for quite a while now, using the XXKPO baseband for the ROM. That is Gingerbread 2.3.4 based and should have better results both in boot time as well as slide-unlock snappiness. It is an European baseband, CMIIW. Our South East Asian baseband is DXKPD. Most official firmwares are available at h t t p : / / w w w . sammobile . c o m . HTH!

    • wow thanks steelicon! so it is imperative to upgrade to Gingerbread in order to fix this?

      • As per advice, one solution is the http://www.sammobile.com/showthread.php?t=34 XXKPO European firmware (Gingerbread 2.3.5) to address the SOD, another is the WiFi Sleep policy should be set to never, or both solutions, whichever works for you, as this is a case-to-case basis. Another is to ensure that WiFi is turned off whenever not in use or in range of the WiFi connection. May also apply to Bluetooth.

I’m starting to get pissed at Samsung, actually, heeheeh!

hope u posted any pictures or vdeos about the update. even in your reviews.

    • what do you mean? on how to do the update? I think it’s pretty straightforward once you’re on Kies.

I have updated my SGS I9003 back in August, and since then, I got rid of the ‘android.something process has stopped’. I also have better battery and GPS lock-in. i’m happy now.

I have updated my friend’s SGS Mini,so far, he said, nothing noticeable aside from less lag application switch 😉

    • jamal

the “android.process…” was probably because of updating your maps. It’s better not to update it if you’re not using it. 🙂

  • jamal

MAD team was able to have a 2.3 update for galaxy 5, but samsung didn’t do anything at all about that. please have a 2.3 update for galaxy 5 please. 🙂

  • Clarissa

my galaxy ace phone just got slower when i upgraded it to gingerbread.. 🙁

    • odd… we’re happy with our upgrade. no crashing at all na. didn’t notice na bumagal yung phone as well.

      • Clarissa

ay ganun po, good for you. mga simple phone functions ang bumagal like unlocking and swiping the screen, pati pala pag answer ng calls.. is the size of the memory card a factor? because mine is just 2GB, but may free space pa na about 200mb.

Hi there, i have a samsung galaxy ace and it is only now that ive decided to upgrade my phone (OS). I’m a noob when it comes to upgrading, do you have any useful tips for a noob like me?

    Thanks in advance 🙂

    • nope any noob can do it. samsung kies will backup your phone before doing the upgrade. just make sure you have lots of battery left when updating.

  • d4ryl3

Any ides why my (latest version of) Kies doesn’t show an update for my Galaxy Ace? It currently has 2.3.3.
