Sony VAIO E and VAIO Y gets more affordable thanks to AMD processor

One of the nice things I saw during the opening of the Sony VAIO store at SM Mall of Asia is how more affordable the VAIOs are getting thanks to AMD the new processors.

The new Sony VAIO E is a 14-inch notebook that comes in a few variations but the one with AMD E450 dual-core processor is the most affordable at Php29,999. That’s a 14-inch VAIO laptop a peso under P30,000! Previous VAIO Es which are powered by an Intel Core i3 is priced at Php36,999. The first time we heard of a sub-30k VAIO is with the 11-inch Sony VAIO Y released more than 6 months ago.

The AMD E-450 is a 1.65GHz dual-core processor which is a mild upgrade to the E-350 (1.6GHz). It is a decent processor for an office or school notebook that has no problems playing HD videos (streaming or locally stored) unlike the integrated Intel HD graphics. There are Core i3 and Core i5 versions of the VAIO E by the way which comes in different colors. The AMD version of the VAIO E only has black with hexagonal patterns as its design.

Sony VAIO E Specs:

  • AMD E-450 (dual-core 1.65GHz processor)
  • AMD Radeon HD 6320 integrated graphics
  • 14 inch WXGA (1366×768) LED
  • 2 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 320 GB 5400 RPM HDD
  • DVD Writer (Dual Layer Support)
  • VGA web camera
  • 4x USB 2.0, VGA, HDMI, 5-in-1 card reader
  • Lithium-ion battery 3.5 HRS
  • SRP: Php29,999

The Sony VAIO Y is something that I really like. Small, light, beautifully designed and budget-friendly. Sony upgraded this laptop from an AMD E-350 to the new AMD E-450 processor which has a slightly higher clockspeed, DDR3 support and a teeny bit more powerful integrated graphics. The first Sony VAIO Y was priced at Php29,999 but since that’s the current price of the VAIO E, this new VAIO Y is now at Php26,999.

The new Sony VAIO Y will still get the mint green, pink and silver color as well as a black color which was not available before. I was told that these new VAIO Ys will be arriving next week.

Sony VAIO Y Specs:

  • AMD E-450 (dual-core 1.65GHz processor)
  • AMD Radeon HD 6320 integrated graphics
  • 11.6 inch WXGA (1366×768) LED
  • 2 GB DDR3 RAM
  • 320 GB 5400 RPM HDD
  • VGA web camera
  • 3x USB 2.0, VGA, HDMI, 5-in-1 card reader
  • 3500mAh Li-Ion battery (4 hours)
  • SRP: Php26,999

But wait, there’s more! The first Sony VAIO Y which as an AMD E-350 processor is still being sold until stocks last (probably until next month only) with an insanely attractive price of Php22,999! If you don’t mind the slight uptick in power of the new VAIO Y, the first version is still worth-considering.

good thing they’re now offering a black version of the Vaio Y. the other colors were just too girly for me. hehe.

  • Robin

The i3 version of the Vaio E is down to Php32,999 at least on the Sony Phils. website.

Love the black Vaio YB, but that 3500 mAh battery feels like a deal breaker.

3.5 hours on a Fusion laptop? WTF?

Of all the things Sony could go cheap on they went with the battery, Acer and HP’s Fusion netbook offerings go 6-7 hours easily. They might as well told you to buy a spare with the laptop.

    • exactly my sentiments regarding the VAIO Y. kung may discounted upgrade to a higher rated battery sana.

I would like to confirm if you say that this product would be sold until stock lasts? You stated that it would be a month ahead from the time you wrote this review. I am planning to buy this model by November, thanks. I believe that you are an active reviewer in this site. In lieu, kindly text me about your kind answer. Thank you very much Calvin.
