Here’s our review of the Torque EGO Beat TV – a budget, entry-level smartphone from Torque that has the ability to act like an analog TV.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Design and Construction:
The Torque EGO Beat TV is a bar type smart phone with a with a 3.5 inch display. It is pretty simple with the standard fare in physical designs – the micro USB port and 3.5mm audio jack at the top, the power button on the right and the volume control on the left. What is very noticeable though is the very thick bezels on the unit. With most phones going for thinner bezel designs this makes the EGO Beat TV feel like it’s from a few years ago.
The antenna for this TV smartphone was not as obvious as other phones’. The pullout antenna was well placed at the top left corner that it did not draw much attention. Also at the back, the phone has a 3 megapixel camera with the flash beside it and at the bottom there are the speakers.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Display and Multimedia:
The 3.5 inch display looks small, mounted on the bezels but it still looks alright. What I found good though was that watching YouTube videos on this phone did not feel like it was a budget phone. The sounds were audible but turning it up to the max will ruin the quality. Talking parts were clear but there still was some slight noise especially when listening to music.
The images were not crisp but they were pretty okay. For this aspect the phone is not impressive but it definitely is not bad either.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Performance:
With a 256MB RAM, don’t expect to this phone to run heavy games and even some of the lighter ones. Installing even the most casual of games like Candy Crush was a problem as the small internal memory of 512MB is already crowded with the pre-installed apps. However, The Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS does give a friendly interface. Apps-wise I would suggest to keep it basic – maybe just have Instagram and Facebook lite as this is a pretty basic phone. The 1.0 GHz processor can handle these apps but do expect some lag from time to time. Even watching on YouTube can get lagged at times.
For benchmarks we used Quadrant Standard Edition and below are the scores:
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Camera:
As mentioned before this is a basic phone and so its camera is pretty much the same. The notable thing for this aspect though is that both the front and rear cameras are at 3 megapixel. It does lag as it focuses in on an image but that is pretty normal for a phone like this. Below are a couple of sample shots with the rear camera.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Call Quality and Connectivity:
During the test call, there were not much problems with the mic or speaker. It is fairly clear but at the wrong spots, there are bound to be problems like voice drops. Other than that I’d say it is decent.
Connectivity-wise, this phone is not far behind from its peers. The Torque EGO Beat TV has 2g and 3g capabilities. It also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, even a GPS satellite connection which is handy to have. It is even USB-OTG capable.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Battery Use:
The 1650mAh Li-on battery that the phone uses is alright. I was able to use it for up to 8 hours with both data and WiFi on. In that time, I watched some YouTube videos and tinkered around with some apps and even tried to watch a little bit of TV. However, to test it out a bit more for five minutes on the TV it did drain 4% of battery.
Torque EGO Beat TV Review – Conclusion:
Priced at Php 1,199, there are not many smartphones that come this cheap. For a price tag that low, I can say that the Torque EGO Beat TV is just ok. There is no denying that it is a budget smartphone but it also tries to be more than that. The phone’s TV feature adds more value to it but this is not for the budding photographer or the casual gamer. This phone sticks to the very basics with just enough power for main social media apps. The multimedia is not the best but it is surprising for a phone at this level. I’d say it’s worth a try if you’re looking for an entry level unit at a low cost.
